Collection: Own Root Rose Plant

**What Are Own-Root Roses?**

Own-root roses are grown from cuttings taken from stock plants, meaning the roots and flowering tops are the same variety. Unlike grafted roses, which use a different rootstock, own-root roses maintain the genetic purity of the plant from top to bottom.

At SG Rose Corner, we are excited to announce our new collection of own-root roses, chosen for their virus-free quality and natural vigor. These roses are grown from first-year cuttings taken from a “mother” or “stock” plant. While own-root roses may be smaller when purchased, they quickly catch up to grafted varieties, typically sold as two-year-old plants.

**The Difference with Own-Root Roses**

Own-root roses develop their entire root system from a single cutting, meaning both their roots and shoots come from the same variety. You may notice the root system has a twisted appearance, similar to the branches of an old tree, which is perfectly normal. There’s no need to untangle these roots before planting.

**Why Choose Own-Root Roses?**

Own-root roses were initially developed as a solution to the Rose Mosaic Virus (RMV), which often spread through grafting. By using virus-free stock plants and avoiding grafting, growers found they could reduce the spread of this virus. Beyond disease resistance, own-root roses offer several other advantages:

- **Hardiness**: Own-root roses are hardier than grafted varieties since their crown is not weakened by a bud union. Grafted roses are more vulnerable to damage during cold winters.

- **True to Variety**: If an own-root rose dies back to the ground in winter, it will grow back true to its variety, unlike grafted roses that may revert to the rootstock variety.

- **Fuller Growth**: Own-root roses send up shoots from their roots, resulting in a fuller and more vigorous plant over time, with increased blooms and longevity.

- **No Suckers**: Since there’s no rootstock, you don’t have to worry about suckers drawing energy away from the main plant.

**Stronger Plants for the Future**

Although own-root roses may appear smaller at first, they grow rapidly. There’s a common saying about own-root roses:

*“The first year they sleep; the second year they creep; the third year they leap!”*

By the third year, an own-root rose will be just as large, if not larger, than a grafted rose of the same age.

**Longer Life Expectancy**

Own-root roses also have a longer lifespan than grafted roses. Since there’s no bud union, there’s no risk of the plant outgrowing it over time. With proper care, your own-root rose will thrive for years to come.

While own-root roses may not provide instant gratification, their durability, hardiness, and consistent growth mean that the rose you’ve chosen will stay true to its form, bloom after bloom, year after year.
